Mumbai Airport Guide 2026: T1 vs T2, Hotel Distances, Andheri & Vile Parle Routes
Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) is India's second-busiest airport, handling 50+ million passengers a year across two terminals. If you're planning a trip — whether you're flying in, picking someone up, choosing where to stay, or just figuring out how to get there from Andheri — this guide answers the questions real travellers actually ask.
Is Mumbai T1 domestic or international?
T1 is domestic only. T2 handles all international flights plus select premium domestic flights.
Here's the simple rule: - Flying within India on IndiGo, SpiceJet, Akasa Air or most low-cost carriers? → T1 (Santa Cruz) - Flying internationally? → T2 (Sahar) - Flying domestic on Air India, Vistara, or some IndiGo/Air India Express flights? → T2 (Sahar)
Always check your boarding pass for the terminal — airlines occasionally shift terminals at short notice, and at Mumbai the consequence of going to the wrong terminal is severe (the terminals are ~5 km apart, with no airside connection).

How far are the major hotels from Mumbai airport?
This is the question we get asked most. Here's an accurate distance + drive-time table for the most-booked hotels near BOM:
| Hotel | Distance from T2 | Drive time (off-peak) | Walking? |
|---|---|---|---|
| ITC Maratha (Sahar) | 0.6 km | 3 min | Yes (with luggage trolley, 8–10 min) |
| Hyatt Regency Mumbai | 0.7 km | 3 min | Yes (10 min) |
| JW Marriott Mumbai Sahar | 1.0 km | 5 min | Yes (12–15 min) |
| Holiday Inn Mumbai International Airport | 1.5 km | 5–8 min | Not recommended with luggage |
| Ibis Mumbai Airport | 2.0 km | 8–10 min | No |
| Hilton Mumbai International Airport | 4.5 km | 15–20 min | No |
| Hilton Garden Inn Mumbai International Airport | 5.5 km | 18–25 min | No |
| The Lalit Mumbai | 1.2 km | 5 min | Maybe (8–10 min) |
| Niranta Airport Transit Hotel | Inside T2 | 0 min | Yes (inside terminal) |
Tip for international travellers: if you have an overnight layover or arrive past midnight, the Niranta Airport Transit Hotel is inside T2 itself — book 3-, 6-, 9-, or 12-hour micro-stays without leaving the secure zone.
Tip for early-morning flights: ITC Maratha, Hyatt Regency, and JW Marriott are practically attached to T2 — perfect for 4–6 AM departures so you avoid the night-time taxi scramble from south Mumbai.
How to get from Andheri / Vile Parle / Bandra to Mumbai airport
Mumbai's local train and metro network connects directly to the airport's neighbourhood. Distances are short but Mumbai traffic can stretch a 3 km drive into 40 minutes.
| From | To T2 distance | To T1 distance | Suggested mode |
|---|---|---|---|
| Andheri Station (Western Line) | 4.5 km | 3.0 km | Auto-rickshaw or Ola/Uber (15–25 min) |
| Vile Parle Station (Western Line) | 2.5 km | 1.5 km | Auto-rickshaw (8–15 min). Closest station to T1. |
| Santacruz Station (Western Line) | 3.5 km | 2.0 km | Auto-rickshaw (10–20 min). Closest station to T1 from the south. |
| Bandra Station | 9.0 km | 7.5 km | Ola/Uber (25–45 min, can be 60 min in peak hours) |
| Kurla / LTT Station | 6.5 km | 5.0 km | Ola/Uber (20–40 min) |
| Andheri Metro Station (Versova-Ghatkopar Line) | 4.0 km | 3.5 km | Auto-rickshaw (15 min) |
| Sahar Road / Off Western Express Highway | 0.5 km (T2) | 5 km (T1) | Walk or short auto |
Important: Vile Parle Station to T2 is the most common confusion — many guides list "Vile Parle to airport" but Vile Parle is closest to T1, not T2. For T2 take an auto-rickshaw via Sahar Road (about 8 minutes). Don't rely on Google Maps showing "shortest distance" — there are no direct walkways across the airport perimeter.
Mumbai traffic warning: between 8–11 AM and 5–9 PM, the Western Express Highway becomes severely congested. Add 50% to estimated travel times during these windows. For early-morning international flights (4–6 AM), book your ride 90 minutes earlier than your plan.
How do you transfer between T1 and T2?
This trips up a lot of first-time visitors:
- No airside connection. You must exit the terminal building, take ground transport, and re-enter the other terminal.
- Free shuttle bus: runs between T1 and T2, intervals of 15–20 minutes, journey 25–30 minutes (slow because of one-way road system).
- Taxi / Ola / Uber: 15–20 minutes off-peak, 30–45 minutes peak. ₹150–250 by app.
- If you have an INTERNATIONAL → DOMESTIC transit: allow at least 3 hours between flights. Less than that is risky.
- If you have a self-transfer with separate tickets: you'll need to collect your bags, clear customs, exit, re-check-in. Allow 4 hours minimum.
This is where our Transit Service shines — we meet you at the arriving aircraft door, handle baggage transfer, escort you between terminals via the fastest route, and re-check you in at the next terminal. Minimum buffer drops to 2 hours safely.
Mumbai airport pickup — where exactly?
T2 has 3 levels of arrivals; T1 has 2. The most common confusion:
- T2 international arrivals exit: Gate 2, ground level — taxi rank is to the right as you exit
- T2 domestic arrivals exit: Gate 5 or 6 — depends on which aerobridge you used
- T1 arrivals exit: Single ground-floor exit, taxi/Ola pickup zone immediately outside
- Ride-hail pickup zones: Ola and Uber have dedicated marked zones — DO NOT use private cars at the kerb (heavy fines)
- Pre-booked private cars / our service: meets you at Gate 2 (T2) or main exit (T1) with a name placard
If you're picking up a relative or sending a driver to receive someone, send them this Google Maps pin: CSMI T2 Arrival Gate 2 (T2 arrivals exit) — much more accurate than just "Mumbai airport".
Best time to arrive at Mumbai airport
Avoid: - Domestic morning rush at T1: 5:30–8:30 AM (long security queues) - International night wave at T2: 11 PM–2 AM (3 hours of dense international departures) - Rain season (June–September): add 60 minutes buffer; Mumbai airport is reasonably resilient but the approach roads flood
Ideal: - Mid-morning (10 AM–1 PM): quietest at both terminals - Mid-afternoon international (2–5 PM): few flights, almost empty - Late evening domestic (9–11 PM): manageable
What to do if your Mumbai flight is delayed
Mumbai has the highest weather-related delay rate of any Indian airport in July–September. Practical steps if your flight goes red:
- Don't leave the airport until you have confirmation of a new departure slot — re-entry through security is the slow part
- The Niranta transit hotel at T2 sells hourly micro-stays — useful if your delay extends 4+ hours
- Pranaam lounge at T2 admits non-flyers (you can wait there with a relative)
- If delay > 5 hours, eligible airlines must offer meal vouchers — ask at the airline counter
Getting around inside the terminals
- T2 is large — the longest walk from check-in to gate is ~800 m. Wheelchairs are free on request.
- T1 has a single concourse — much easier to navigate but more crowded.
- Porter service at both terminals: official airport porters available at marked stations. Tip is implied — typically ₹100–200 per porter. Our porter service includes baggage trolley + escort throughout, no separate tipping.

Common questions about Mumbai airport
Is there food inside T2 before security? Yes — small café and convenience options pre-security at T2. Better selection airside (after security).
Can I sleep at Mumbai airport overnight? Yes, but it's not comfortable. T2's transit hotel (Niranta) is the better option — micro-stays from ~₹1,500/3 hours.
Is Mumbai airport WiFi free? Yes — free WiFi at both terminals. You'll need an Indian SIM (or roaming) to receive the OTP. Or use our service — we share our personal hotspot with international arrivals.
Are luggage trolleys free? Yes — free trolleys at all entry points and baggage claim. They run out at peak — that's where porter service becomes valuable.
Can I receive someone at Mumbai airport without parking? Yes — there's a "Pickup and Drop" zone at both terminals where you can wait 5 minutes for free. Going beyond costs ₹250+ per hour in the paid parking.
